Plant Care in Autumn

With the drop in temperatures, our plants and - above all - our garden are more sensitive and need special care. At Aliseda Real Estate we tell you the different methods to care for our plants and protect them from weather conditions during the coldest times of the year.

Autumn is the most complicated time of year for our plants. This is because they have to fulfill a single function, that of remaining in a vegetative state and being reborn the next season, that is, winter.

It is therefore necessary to take measures during the autumn months to ensure that they are prepared for winter and survive low temperatures to prevent damage.

How to protect my plants from the cold?

The greenhouses:

The use of greenhouses to take care of your garden in the cold season is essential. These can be made of glass or also plastic, to protect the most delicate plants that are sensitive to low temperatures.

Additionally, greenhouses have the advantage of extending the growing season of plants. For example, in some countries like Spain or elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest, summers are characterized as cooler and shorter, making it difficult to grow individual plants. In this way, greenhouses allow you to start planting even if there is still frost outside.

Cover the plants:

Another infallible method against the cold to protect your plants is to cover them with tarps, bags or plastic. This way they will also be individually protected and will not be affected by frost or wind.

As for how to protect a tree from frost, it is advisable to wrap the trunk with cardboard or fabric so that it does not break with the change in temperatures if they are young trees or trees with thin bark. Plastics are also often used to cover the plants. If we opt for these, we must keep in mind that they cannot be black, this way the reflection of the sun's rays will be avoided.

On the other hand, it is recommended to cover the plants before nightfall. And in the morning, when the frost has thawed, remove the elements again to cover them.

Group the plants:

What's the point of grouping all the plants together? Placing all the plants together helps create microclimates, thus also generating good levels of humidity and temperature. In addition, placing them close to the wall helps create a protective layer from the cold.

We must also prevent plants from being in direct contact with the soil. Thus, it is very common to place them on wooden and plastic planks, shelves or shelves.

Reduce the frequency of watering your lawn in autumn

Reducing the frequency of watering is another tip to take care of your garden during this time, since in winter the plants need less water.

During times of low temperatures, plants go into hibernation because they need fewer nutrients to survive, so excess water could affect them. Therefore, the best time to water our plants is the warmest hours of the day.

Additional Fall Lawn Care

Another tip that should be taken into account against the cold is to moisten the soil on which the plants or grass are located. This will maintain heat, protect the roots and warm the air near the ground. This prevents the roots of the plant from freezing.
